These data contain worldwide gridded maps of planting and harvesting dates for agricultural crops at a resolution of 0.5 degrees. The dataset was created by digitzing and georeferencing existing information on crop planting and harvesting dates.

Data is available for 19 crops including barley, maize, potatoes, rice, and wheat. Crops that are grown in multiple, distinct seasons over a single year have been divided into separate datasets for each season.

Each crop includes eleven datasets, each representing a different variable:

  • Mean planting or harvest day of the year
  • Start of the planting or harvest period
  • End of the planting or harvest period
  • Number of days between the start and end of the planting or harvest period
  • Total number of days between planting and harvest
  • Index showing the data ID from the original data
  • Filled index showing the extrapolated data and the observation ID of the cell used to fill the current cell

The above map shows the mean harvest day of the year for rice

For locations where crop calendar observations were not available, the data has been extrapolated to fill-in these areas. Each crop includes an index file which shows the area for which data has been extrapolated and gives the observation ID of the cell used to fill the current cell's value. These extrapolated values should be used with care, as they have not been checked for accuracy. For more information, on extrapolated data see the README file.

Before using these data, please read the dataset documentation, which include caveats the should be kept in mind when using these data.

If you download this dataset, please email the dataset's creator, Bill Sacks (wsacks "at" gmail.com). He is interested in knowing how the data is being used and can also keep you informed of any updates to the dataset.

The original Crop Calendar data is freely available from the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Center for Sustainability and the Global Environment (SAGE). Here, the data is available in 5 minute and 0.5 degree resolution in netCDF and ArcINFO ASCII format. Additionally, the dataset is available in two versions 'filled' (extrapolated) and 'unfilled' (unextrapolated).

The dataset is described in the following publication:
Sacks, W.J., D. Deryng, J.A. Foley, and N. Ramankutty (2010). Crop planting dates: an analysis of global patterns. Global Ecology and Biogeography 19, 607-620. DOI: 10.1111/j.1466-8238.2010.00551.x.
